Manchester City is accused by the English Premier League of violating financial regulations.

According to a statement made public on Monday, the English Premier League has charged Manchester City with breaking more than 100 of the league's financial regulations and referred the team to an impartial commission.

From the 2009–10 season until the 2017–18 campaign, City is alleged to have failed to report correct financial information in compliance with Premier League regulations.

The Premier League announcement stated that the "members of the Commission will be nominated by the independent Chair of the Premier League Judicial Panel" and that the hearings would be "secret and heard in private."

The Premier League claims that City violated both the profit and sustainability standards of the Premier League from the 2015–16 to 2017–18 seasons as well as the financial fair play (FFP) criteria of UEFA from the 2013–14 to 2017–18 seasons.

Since being owned by The Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008, City has won six Premier League championships, two FA Cups, six EFL Cups, and finished second in the 2021 Champions League.

The creation of an all-star team with some of the top players in the world has contributed to that achievement.

The club released the following statement on Monday: "Manchester City FC is startled by the issuing of these purported breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly considering the significant involvement and large amount of comprehensive materials that the EPL has provided.

"The Club welcomes the independent Commission's study of this case in order to objectively take into account the substantial body of unchallengeable material that exists in support of its position.

"As a result, we anticipate this issue being resolved definitively."

Due to "severe breaches" of club license and FFP rules in 2020, City was barred from participating in European football competitions for two seasons.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which later overturned the suspension but determined that City had not cooperated with UEFA officials, reduced the original sanction of 30 million euros ($34 million) to 10 million euros ($11.3 million).
